Put simply, the way they are made, and the materials they are made from. Nylon is a difficult material to extrude accurately, because it shrinks sharply as the molten nylon freezes. If nylon mandrels are made using normal extrusion techniques (eg. 'free extrusion'), this shrinkage creates large diameter variations and internal holes ('shrinkage voids') in the mandrel. This gives problems during hose production including variable hose bore, mandrel collapse or necking during braiding, difficult mandrel extraction, and water entrainment leading to pinholes and other defects in the hose.
Bell Plastics specially-optimised extrusion process guarantees that our mandrels have no internal holes, and delivers very tight diameter control, eliminating the problems seen in free-extruded mandrels. And our specially-modified nylon materials deliver the right combination of properties for hose production. |
